Trump's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed view of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies represent an grave threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual danger confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
