Crew Member Shares Emotional Distress Following Wave of Backlash Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her roots – was buried under the tide of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

In the time since reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of space.

The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from various fields.
