Are You Able to Solve This? The Overlooked Dutch Creation Which Forged the Modern Globe
One can find numerous candidates for the title of “world’s greatest innovation.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.
According to a new book, though, that title belongs to a mechanised timber mill invented by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Before automated sawing, constructing a simple merchant vessel required around ten sawyers working over three months,” writes the author. “With wind-driven lumber mills, an identical quantity of processed timber might be produced in less than seven days.”
Thanks to their speedy mechanical cutter, that turned timber into planks with virtually no human effort, Dutch builders could construct ships faster than any other nation, which sparked a century of Dutch naval, financial and artistic supremacy across the continent and the globe.
The Original Genuine Industrial Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, argues the writer, represented “humanity’s first authentic industrial apparatus.” A windmill turned a wheel. A single part converted its circular movement into vertical motion to power the cutting blade. Another component transformed the rotary motion into a lateral movement advancing the log to the blade. A ratchet system shifted the wood forward one precise increment per cycle.
“Each element seemed simple on its own. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to combine these parts so the machine acted in a perfectly controlled sequence, sawing with each descending motion while advancing with each return motion. It was an astonishingly clever use of basic parts.”
